Grades
In third grade student receive "letter grades" (A, B, C, D, F). Per CMS policy, grades are given on a 10 point scale. Please look for student work to come home most Wednesdays. If you see that your child had difficulty on an assignment, they may make corrections and return it for added points. Graded work will be entered into PowerSchool. Parents can log into PowerSchool to see their child's grades. Click the link to follow along with your child's progress. Use your child's student web ID and student password.
Homework
In third grade it is our goal to begin to teach students self-management skills and study skills they will need to be successful in school. Each morning the students are given time to write their nightly assignment in their agenda. Their nightly assignment typically consists of 20-30 minutes of reading and a short math assignment. Each morning I check that the nightly reading is recorded and an adult (or care taker) signed it.
The intent of homework is to give the students a mini review or reinforcement of third grade skills. It is also a good way for families to see what we are working on in school as well as to support your child if the concept is challenging. Although I do not want a parent to complete a child's assignment, I do encourage you to assist your child as needed. It is not always possible when working with a classroom full of students to know if a child needed extra assistance on a given day. This is a chance for the child to receive some extra one on one instruction from you. Please write me a little note in the agenda if you feel your child needed a lot of help so I am aware and can arrange for extra instruction.
The intent of the nightly reading assignment is to increase the students' reading skills. Research is very clear on the fact that the more you read the better reader you become! Third graders are typically at a point where they are trying to transition from reading simpler picture books to chapter books. They are developing their reading skills beyond just reading the print and answering who, what, when, where questions. Now they must read text with little picture support. They must also go beyond the basic questions to answer cause and effect questions, analyze characters, interpret information and apply it. In order to make this transition they must spend time reading. Research also tells us they need to read books that are "good fit" books. This means it is not too easy and not too hard but "Just Right"! Just think of Goldilocks and the three bears! Reading time is not the time to try to "challenge yourself" to a difficult book. Students who do this spend so much time trying to read the words that they lose the meaning of what they have read. So use the nightly reading time to have your child read books that are just right!
